MOTHER NATURE IS OUR MUSE

Our materials are simple and honest.

We are inspired by our natural surroundings and the raw state of the materials we hand-select. We use premium, natural materials all locally sourced in Indonesia. There are two resources Indonesia is particularly proud of: tropical hardwoods—specifically teak—and rattan.

For our first collection, The Capitol Collection, we use exclusively solid teak wood and rattan, true to Jeanneret’s original blueprints and culturally significant to our artisan partners.

ROOTED IN THE RENEWABLE

TEAK

Teak is a durable and elegant premium hardwood. Due to its superior quality and cost, it’s often exclusively used to make luxury furniture.

Teak has a high oil content, making it moisture, heat, and bug resistant. We source our wood from community owned and operated farms who practice sustainable forestry. We hand pick logs that are symmetrical in shape with limited surface defects such as knots and scarring.

We dry our teak in a kiln ‘drying oven’ for up to 5 weeks to achieve the ideal level of moisture in the wood before handcrafting.

WOVEN FROM NATURE

OUR RATTAN

Rattan is considered one of nature’s strongest materials, despite its delicate appearance. It is an abundant, rapidly renewable resource. Grown beneath the tree canopy, rattan depends on the forest and only thrives when it does too.

Native to Java and sourced from community-managed forests, rattan grows in long slender stems, similar to a vine, maintaining an almost uniform diameter throughout its length, sometimes up to 600 feet. The outer stem is hard and durable. The solid, pliable inner core is extremely resilient.

To prepare the rattan, our artisans remove the bark and cut the inner core into thin strips, or reeds, which are then woven by hand into each TreeHause chair seat and back.
